Cones
Used Cones
Pyrometric Cones are “used to gauge heatwork during the firing of ceramic materials. The cones…are positioned in a kiln with the wares to be fired and provide a visual indication of when the wares have reached a required state of maturity, a combination of time and temperature. Thus, pyrometric cones give a temperature equivalent, they are not simple temperature-measuring devices.” (Wiki!)
Before and after
Being a Cone (Christie Cone that is and yes, it is a total coincidence!), you’d think I’d know everything about cones…but I don’t. What I do know is that they are extremely helpful in making sure you are firing your kilns evenly and consistently. Well, as consistently as possible since the outside weather (muggy, rainy, cold, hot) also affect how your kiln fires.
Detail- each cone has a number on it
I imagine a lot of people don’t realize how long pieces are in a kiln and what the process is. I know I certainly did not understand it before making pieces and firing them myself. My average bisque firing time is 9 hours, and the second firing (glaze firing) is about 6-7 hours. These poor little cones sit in that 2000°F+ temperatures so that I make sure your pieces come out looking lovely!
ps-I have another kiln that has a kiln sitter that uses these tiny little cones. If you know me at all, you know I have a thing for tiny stuff. So bear with me as I show you a photo of how cute and small they are!
So cute!
