Are your pieces dishwasher and microwave safe?
Yes, indeed. But as in all handmade items- the more care you take with the piece the longer it will last.
Are your pieces made with a mold?
No. I make each piece by hand using a slab (sheet) of clay
Are your pieces food safe?
Yes. I only use foodsafe non-toxic glazes.
How long does it take to make a piece?
From start to finish it takes about a month to make any one piece. First I make the piece. Sometimes I can let it dry quickly in open air, but most often I have to cover it with plastic to slow down the drying to prevent warping or cracking. After it has completely dried (usually takes 4-8 days) and is in the stage called “bone dry” I carefully load it into the kiln. When clay is “bone dry” it is in it’s most fragile state. I only fire the kiln when I have enough pieces to fill the kiln so as to not waste energy. After I have bisque fired it (which takes 9 hours to fire and another 18 hours to cool) I glaze the piece. A day later, I load the kiln a second time and glaze fire it. This firing takes 6-7 hours and another 14-16 to cool. Usually I go through this process as least once a month.
